    Hi -

I can’t seem to find a detailed description of the structure of EE Themes. I initially figured they were just the CSS and images for a particular site design, but when I looked at the contents of site/themes, it contains .php files.

What exactly are the concepts behind themes, and do I need to use them or can I just use CSS?

As a related question, when I create a template, one of the possible selections in the Template Type dropdown is CSS Stylesheet. Why would you do this? Why not just put your CSS files in a folder at the root of your site and refer to them with an absolute URL?

    Thanks.

Themes, in EE, really are only used when you setup a new blog, or install EE for the first time. If you simply want to change how your site works and looks, just edit the templates: you can use PHP there, but you don’t have to.

Some people find it convenient to use EE also for their “external” files, like .css. This has some additional advantages (editing via the control panel, caching by EE), but if you prfere to use external stylsheets you can certainly do that; it’s your choice.
