    1) When a new member registers, he will be sent a validation email to confirm his registration. Do the admin in EE has the option to RESEND the validation email in case any member does not get it (may be because of problem in SMTP server) ?

    2) Even though member validates his email id (by clicking the confirmation link in his email id), do the admin has the option to preview all confirmed memberships and approve / delete them ?

    3) When a member changes his email id through his control panel, will the validation email be sent to his new email id asking him to confirm ? And do the admin has the option to approve / reject his email change ?

Yes. This can be done from Admin—> Members and Groups—> View Members or by looking directly at the person’s member profile from the CP.

    2) Even though member validates his email id (by clicking the confirmation link in his email id), do the admin has the option to preview all confirmed memberships and approve / delete them ?

You have 3 options for Membership activation.

    - No activation required.
    - Email activation.
    - Admin activation.

You can find the details in the Membership Preferences section of the User Guide.

    3) When a member changes his email id through his control panel, will the validation email be sent to his new email id asking him to confirm ? And do the admin has the option to approve / reject his email change ?

No. Once a person is an active member of the site they can change their account details without admin authorization/approval.

So the validation emails can be RESENT to multiple members at a time. Right ?

If I choose ‘Admin activation’ option, the validation email goes to the member or not ?
I mean, I want them to validate their email, but still they won’t become a member immediately. In the ‘Admin > Activate Pending Members’ section, I should be able to view who validated their email and who did not. Then I will approve them (or delete some memberships if the email ids are spam ids.)

Is this the way it runs ?

No. Once a person is an active member of the site they can change their account details without admin authorization/approval.

Doesn’t it make more sense to validate the member’s new email id ? This validation ensures he did not enter an incorrect email id either intentionally or by typo.

From the View Member screen you can view all the Pending members (those who need activation), select them all, and resend all the email activations at once.

It is email activation or admin activation, not both. In other words, if you choose to do Admin activation the person registering does not receive an activation email. You activate them as the Admin instead.

He can see it right there on the screen and change it again if a typo was made. Sending an email to validate what can be easily read on screen is overkill, especially when its very easy to correct/update.

If we think about a very BIG website (or forum), there will be some malicious people (or the website’s competitors) who try to find the loop holes. They may register with correct email id and then change the email id to official email id of someone else (lets say, CEO of some company) and subscribe to all email alerts and threads in the forum. Then all blame comes to the owner of website (forum) when that CEO is flooded with emails.

For example, my current IPB forum has so many members and I generally find at least few malicious people everyday who try to do the same. Fortunately in my IPB forum, the email id change has to be validated by the users. As long as they don’t validate their new changed email id, their membership status goes to ‘pending members’.

I do understand that EE is not just a forum software alone and so cannot have all forum features, but this is an important feature - I feel.

    Any comments are welcome…:-)

    Hi Suri,

I understand what you’re saying but it simply hasn’t been a problem reported with our community. You are welcome to make that a Feature Request for it. My job here isn’t to argue about methodology but to let you know how EE currently works so you can make a decision for your project.

    Thank You for the reply.

I am just trying to understand the strengths and weaknesses of EE so that I can plan my project better. I know every software cannot do EVERYTHING. So I feel it’s as important to understand weaknesses of a software as we do for strengths.

In fact, EE meets 80 % of my requirements straightaway, that 99 % of other softwares did not.

I am trying to clarify the remaining 20 % where I can analyze and see if I can live with those weaknesses or develop a module for that.
