How do I display member details on my website pages?

For a proposed business directory website, my initial idea was for businesses to sign up, and then submit their company details (name, address etc) via a weblog, that would be displayed in a list on their business categories page (e.g. ‘pubs’).

I’ve though of a possible better way of doing this though - and wanted to check if this was possible…

Rather than display the weblog entries on the directory pages, is it possible to display the members details that they have already input into their own member profile page? As each business already has to enter their details into their profile - name, address, etc, it would save them doing it all over again via a weblog post.

    Can this be done?

I would need to display each members name and profile information in a list, and I would also need to separate members into groups so they can be displayed on the correct page for the group they’re in.

For example on the ‘pubs’ directory page:

    Pub1 name
    Pub1 address
    Website URL
Link to additional information (if they have paid for this option)

    Pub2 name
    Pub2 address
    Website URL
Link to additional information (if they have paid for this option)

    etc.

As well as saving them the time of inputting this information twice, it would ensure that members don’t sneak on additional posts to publicise their company.

    Thanks for looking.

I’ve found this in the knowledge base:

How can I make the Member List show a specific Group?

Not quite sure if it would do the job - it might work, but I would need the list to display the members details, not just a list of names.

    Hmmm.

I’ve also found these two entries:

Customized member list page Custom Member List

The first one is from June 2005 - is there a simpler way of doing this now? I would also need to separate the members into groups and display them on separate group pages.

    Thanks.

I’m running the core version as a demo at the moment - so I can’t access or try out the member features, which seem to be part of the commercial version.

If anyone can answer my query above then it’d be helpful.

familychose, the core version doesn’t support member features. 😊

Custom Member List - there isn’t another method other than using the query module. I actually wrote that year ago. 😊

There may be some plugins floating around that do this, but the query works OK.

Thanks for the reply Sue, I’m buying the full version shortly anyway so I’ll try the method you posted - I want to try and avoid using plug ins if possible.

I just wanted to check that it still worked with the latest version.

Would the standard search facility still work if I was displaying member details rather than weblog content?

So for example if my page was displaying

    ‘The Flying Horse Pub
    Normanton
    Scotland
    Telephone 012345 234523’

taken from the members details, and not a weblog post, would the search facility still find this information, or would a custom search option be required?

    Thanks.

There is a separate member search, but the standard search modules is for weblog entries only.

    Thanks for the reply Lisa.

There is a separate member search, but the standard search modules is for weblog entries only.

I notice in the control panel there is a member search facility:

    member search

Can elements of this member search be integrated into the search module?

I’ve also found this that shows how to include members names in the standard search module:

    Member Name
You may optionally search by member name (the screen name) by adding this field to your form. If you change the form field, you need to be sure to leave the name=“member_name” attribute alone.

    <label for=“member_name”>Member Name:</label>

    <input type=“text” name=“member_name” id=“member_name” maxlength=“100” size=“40” />

But is it possible to search for other member details (e.g. address)?

    Thanks.

Sorry, fc, I had other obligations over the weekend.

There is a front-end search at the bottom of the memberlist which you can use.

Thanks Lisa, that looks just the job.

I’ll have a go at building my directory using the memberlist and search and if it works I’ll post the results in this thread in case anyone else is thinking of doing something similar.
