    Hey all,

In reference to this thread I need some opinions on how you think the CI Base design should be structured.

The basic outline is like this.

    Homepage

Content: I’m not 100% sure what to put here. I’m thinking codeigniter news and user submitted tutorials.

Side: I really don’t have a clue what you’d like to see here. A search box seems a definate requirement, followed by a category list? Or would you prefer the way Cake Bakery do it where you have a page of categories with a browse tab in the top nav? Other than that you could have recent code (mix of new and recently updated code).

    Browse Code

Content: Obviously a list of categories with descriptions.

    Side: Same as homepage.

    View Code

Content: Code title, description and author. Possible breadcrumb for which category it’s in. Comments at the bottom.

Side: Latest version, homepage, last updated and number of downloads.

Not 100% sure where to put the “favourite” and “download” boxes on this page.

    New Features

Other than the new design I’d be looking to create a tutorials section where users can submit tutorials. I’m going to add email subscriptions. E.g. email when a favourite code is updated and email when someone comments your code. I’m also going to clean up the submit code page and make comments in news and code longer, 255 characters is too short.

Please, please, please let me know any other feature requests. I want to work on the whole site and launch it all at once instead of filtered out features which may contain bugs (local testing doesn’t mean there won’t be bugs :( ) and I’m sure users would get annoyed with constantly having to email me with bug reports.

I would say the home page filled with newest code, then the news of CIbase on another page. It is more interresting to look directly which code is new. Personally, when I fire up CIBase, I directly click on “New code”.

Maybe also you can think about present this as 2 colums, let’s say left column with newest code and right columns with latest updated code.

As another idea, I like this:

So you’d prefer new & recently updated code on the homepage with five latest news in the side box below the search?

Yes, that should be better (personally feeling)

It’s a good idea. Just wondering what to put in the right side now

    Search
    ————-
    Text Field | Submit Button

    Latest Articles [includes tutorials]
    ————-
    date | article name

    What else? A tag cloud?

A RSS of the new listings of my website? http://www.codeigniterdirectory.com/index.php?option=com_mtree&task=rss&type=new&Itemid=10

Then I put on mine the RSS of yours. What you think about having some synergy between our 2 websites?

Any suggestions on the view code page? I’ve done the categories and home page but I want to make the view code page more interesting than the old one. More web 2.0 😉

I think a Most Downloaded list would be good, it shows what people are interested in.

Something like the mozilla addons would be great. Or something nicer looking along the same lines as http://www.apple.com/downloads/ . The green on mozilla addons just doesn’t cut it :p

EDIT: Also a beefed up search is a must. Its got to be powerful.

    Progress so far:

    Index
    http://www.seanharrison.co.uk/img/uploads/index_view.gif

    Category
    http://www.seanharrison.co.uk/img/uploads/category_view.gif

It’s all fake content so they don’t represent the real stats, etc. They’re static html pages at the moment. Wanted to get them two done and then move on to the code page and the rest.

Let me know what you think. Suggests are welcome 😊
