What are you sitting on?

Well I have been starting to suffer some sore back problems in the past months (infact had to take off 3 days because I couldn’t even stand at one point!) and have narrowed it down to the chair that I had and of course the fact I spend 8-10 hours a day in it.

I ended up buying a new chair which (unfortunately!) isn’t as fancy looking but it is really good on my back and I also got a foot rest thing to neutralise the pressure on my back. So far so good!

I was actually looking at getting a Herman Miller Aeron after seeing a few other forums recommending them - but the $1400AUD price tag plus 12 week delivery time was a bit offputting, Ill see how this new one goes.

So what are you guys sitting on to get your CI code together? Anyone got some fancy chairs like the Aeron? 😛

Lone! I have that chair exactly!  I ended up pulling off the arms though cause I found that they were too high for my likely.  The chair is fantastic and comfortable imho.  Also got this great big desk too. Fits three 19inch screens side by side on it (and then some space either side).

I used to have a chair somewhat similar to the Herman Miller but in Leather.  Thing broke after 13 months (of course 1 month after warranty expires) and I was most unimpressed by that.

Do those foot rest things actually work? I normally end up folding my legs every once in a while when sitting too long.

Haha great to see im not the only one with that chair systemsos - was a good buy and feels really good.

The foot rest has been real handy to have my feet somewhere nice and stable and as said take the pressure off my back 😊

@John Fuller: What do you mean folding chair?

I tested a kneeling chair and I must admit it was really good - but my table is too low and Im too tall for it to be suitable but I would really look at getting one down the track as it really relieves any pressure off your back.

Can’t believe Im 24 and having a sore back and looking for ergonomic chairs already :(

Makes you feel really old doesn’t it.  I’ve always had a wonderful back since I was younger though, fell off a roof (kids) - so good chairs will always been important to me 😊

Have a sudden urge to take a snap shot of my home office setup and post…  My desk is far too tidy at home - doesn’t feel quite right. lol.

Oh wow… We need to organise you a new chair. Let’s do that ebay thing where you trade a paperclip for something, and then something again until you have a new chair.

Holy crap John - thats one hardcore seat! 😛

@systemsos: Should make a new thread to other users to post up their office setup - was thinking of doing something like it a couple of days ago.

WTB More coffee. I am a little tired at the moment. Might look at doing it tomorrow in all that “spare time” I have.

Heh, I am 30 and no back problems yet.  Sometimes for the ultimate ghetto setup I use a TV tray for a desk.  😉

I sit on something similar to this when I’m at my desk, just a little better looking.  It’s as comfortable as it looks, so depending on the weather and time of day I’ll sit outside, on my bed, or elsewhere - with my laptops on my legs.  Not the most comfortable thing either (damn macbook). I really want one of these.

Haha, glad I am not the only one.  Yikes, my folding chair is probably more comfortable than that.  You can pick on up from Walmart for like $15.  😉

I sit on a government-surplus steel-and-pleather chair. It’s really ugly, the pleather doesn’t breathe at all, and it isn’t very comfortable. Then again, it’s uncomfortable enough that I’m constantly shifting how I sit on it, which helps avoid continuous back strain. I also shift my laptop around a lot as I work which helps, too. I find that the most damaging thing when working on a computer is for it to be shifted more than about 5 degrees to the left or right of the natural typing position.

I know this sounds really dorky, but also pilates-esque exercise or even qi-gong once a day really helps mitigate back trouble. There are sets of micro-muscles that help support your bone structure; when they don’t get regular exercise, it becomes a lot easier to overstress your joints.

I am using a cheap knock off of the Aeron chair.  Works for me though.

The key to avoid injury from sitting down is variety. Keep changing your position throughout the day.
