Hi all, I currently use Aptana and PSPad. I’ve tried EasyEclipse, Jedit, Notepad++, GEdit (when on Linux), and I can’t settle on any. I used to use Dramweaver et al exclusively for web design, it is powerful, but costly and restricts coding creativity IMHO.

    What editor/IDE do you use?

You know, I didn’t have much luck with Aptana, though I hear great things about it. If anyone has a link to a tutorial/review, I’d be willing to check it out.

I do a lot of hand-coding, so on my personal Windows systems I use Programmer’s Notepad. I have been trying to develop a codeIgniter textclips package for it, but with limited energy and success.

At work (again on Windows), I currently use the e text editor, which is basically a windows port of BBEdit. Again, it would be nice to have a codeIgniter bundle, but the only one out there has compatibility problems. Obviously, e is not a completely compatible port 😊

Hey Jay, try here, http://www.aptana.tv. The Aptana guys provide lots of screencast, back to the early 0.2 versions.

I’m gonna have a look at some of the editors you mention… thanks.

I’ve been using Dreamweaver for a few years now and I’ve never had the need to switch. But since I upgraded to CS3 this has changed. While you’re connected to a remote site DW does something (send packets or some like that) that consumes 100% of my CPU every 30 seconds or so. It’s a known bug but hasn’t been fixed yet.
I’ve been looking at E, EditPlus and PSPad, but I also can’t decide what to go for, so I stick with DW and try to live with the 100% CPU spikes.

Actually the main reason I haven’s switched is DW FTP’s stuff upon save. If there’s an editor out there that does the same I’m switching.

I’m also curious what others are using/recommending.

    EDIT: Aptana looks very promising!

I found the Eclipse-varients complex setup dependencies, often, more trouble than they’re worth.

For a competent, simple PHP IDE I find myself, continually, returning to the Russian PHP Expert Editor (http://ankord.com/ ).  It’s very cheap $35e ... and uses good debuggers ... WELL done.

I was using HTML Kit Tools but am currently trying PHPed out. So far for php development is amazing. You can use your SVN tortoise commands straight from it and has great features to help write code. Bit on the pricy side but I think it could easily save time and money.

For PHP editing Aptana is looking awful. The user interface is pretty difficult to use. Maybe I need to spend more than 20 minutes to work out how to enable the syntax highlighting after installing the PHP plugin.

Why doesn’t a new php file show up in the new file drop down menu? Even saving a file as .php doesn’t affect the highlighting.

I think it pays to spend some time on getting to know the software. Ok, there’s a lot of stuff there, probably too much, but I can say I’m pleasantly surprised. Looks like a winner.

EDIT: Maybe I like it because it has a Dreamweaver feel to it 😉

@codex: I absolutely agree, how can you possibly learn a fully-fledged IDE that took years to develop in under half an hour?

Aptana is indeed a full and rich editing environment, and as you say, it has a ‘Dreamweaver’  feel. It is built on (and has a plugin for) Eclipse, which has 1000s of development hours behind it via the open source community. I’m not saying it’s perfect, but it is stable.

It comes down to needs and preferences, kinda like that favourite of forum topics among open source advocates: Gimp or Photoshop, mega-bucks or free, consumer or pro.

Well, still fiddling with the thing but indeed, I can’t find stuff easily. If I could find the ‘upload file upon save’ I’d be happy and willing to invest more time. There’s just too much going on.

    I guess I’m a minimalist fan too 😉

Well, I do know Aptana has ftp sync options, as per Dreamweaver. check out the user docs on the Aptana website. The documentation is quite good.

I use Textmate on a Macbook Pro with Leopard (spaces rocks)...

The whole dev setup has really changed the way I work, making it much quicker.
