I’m about to start putting together my first EE site. I thought I’d go through the tutorial on boyink.com first but something a bit odd is happening right away. I create a Template and paste some html into it but when I hit update it adds a \ character in front of any single or double quote marks. If I make a change and hit update again it adds 2 more. next time it adds 3 more and so on. I thought I must be doing something wrong so I went back to the video Tutorials and typed in exactly the same as was in there. I end up with this.

    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"
    \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\">

every place there is a single or double quote.

Any ideas what’s happening. I don’t want to be doing something wrong from the very beginning.

    Hi, Tim,

Can you check your PHP info (Admin -> Utilities -> PHP Info) for magic_quotes and tell us what that is set to, please?

magic_quotes_gpc, magic_quotes_runtime and magic_quotes_sybase are all set to Off for Local and Master.

Tim, we had another user with this issue, you might like to read through this post to see what troubleshooting was done and the end solution.

OK, thanks, I think I’m getting somewhere. I was having exactly the same problem as in that other post, same circumstances (temporary url with weird preview address). Anyway I’ve moved EE to a sub domain of another site and my \\ problem is cured. Yay. My server experience before has been putting the FTP details into dreamweaver and uploading so I was pretty happy with myself.

Anyway now I’ve lost all the styling when I log in to the control panel, it’s like I’ve turned off the CSS. All help gratefully received.

Even without CSS you can navigate the control panel, though it isn’t really fun. =)  Can you try going to Admin -> System Preferences -> General Configuration, and making sure your path to the Themes is correct?

Yes! my CSS is back. Thanks Lisa. I’m sure I’ll be back with more questions but in the mean time have a good weekend.
