EE Requires PHP safe_mode off for saving templates as text files?

I’ve never really had a problem saving templates as text files until one of my client’s server had safe_mode on by default and the templates would save the folders, but the folders would be empty. I restarted my FTP, refreshed, checked permissions, and did this 10-15 different times.  Then did a search on the forum, didn’t find anything related.  So then I thought I would compare my plesk settings to my client’s and noticed that PHP safe_mode on was unchecked on my plesk where I save templates as text files also.  So I unchecked it and the templates saved fine.

A PHP friend of mine had said that that probably isn’t a good thing to have safe_mode off.  Is this opening up the server to security holes? Is there a way to make the templates save without turning off safe_mode?

Thanks in advanced for any help.

Matt, server configuration is beyond the scope of what we offer here in the Technical Support section. So I’ll move this question over to the General forum for others to reply.

One way of looking at things:Safe_mode can used by hosts who don’t know how to properly configure their server for security. This adds a level of security by disallowing or changing how PHP runs. For instance EngineHosting doesn’t use it.

Thread for information on your initial problem.

Hey Matt, my opinion of Safe Mode could not be better stated than by PHP.net on the subject.

    Warning

Safe Mode was removed in PHP 6.0.0.

Not sure if it might help, but I ran into a similar problem a while ago. Check this thread for a possible solution.
