I have just recently, to my delight, discovered EE. I have been using Wordpress for years and this week as I was trying to do a design update I realized how much I disliked the way WP handled a few things. Long story made short, I stumbled across EE.

I have been working with EE Core for a few days now and I think I understand how it works. Here are a few thoughts that I have come up with that I want to make sure that I am thinking properly with EE.

First, “weblogs” are simply sections for a site which can be used to divide the site into multiple areas all which contain different content/categories/templates/etc.

Second, templates used within a weblog can also be used to divide the site into different areas based on the URL schema. website.com/index.php/templatename/postname

Third, categories are used to organize posts within a weblog.

Am I correct in the way that I am thinking? EE looks to be an excellent solution for what I need, I just want to make sure that I understand it before using it on professional sites.

Whilst there are many different ways of doing things with EE you have hit the nail on the head with the standard out of the box implementation model. I think you will be exceptionally pleased when you come to using EE more and definitely wonder how you managed without it as you start to use it more.

A really really powerful site can be set up with relative ease and due to EE’s fantastic code-base it is easy for people to create plugins, extensions and modules that further increase the capabilities of the system.

If you have any questions as you come to using EE more then do post on here as someone will always step in to give a hand. That is by far one of the top reasons (I believe) for using EE as the support is simply top notch!! 😊

I would just clarify one thing - templates and weblogs have no built-in relationship in ExpressionEngine.  You use EE tags to pull data into templates - that could be a weblog, a gallery, a hardcoded HTML page, or combinations of all of these, and multiples therein.

You can build a weblog <-> template relationship, but there is not one within ExpressionEngine. =)

Also, because you can share a category group (or groups) amongst weblogs, you can build relationships that way. Categories don’t have to be just for organizing posts within a single weblog.
