OK - if you’re requiring them to register you can use a “standalone entry form” to allow them to post into existing blogs.

No.  EE is not really setup to easily allow users to create blogs, and by doing so you would be in violation of the licensing agreement.  See this KB article around that issue.

    Hi Michael,

Ryan was posting with regards to a website that we are working on for a high profile client. We need to allow users to login to the site (frontend) and post details about an activity that they have undertaken outdoors, possibly with some images or videos, it doesn’t necessarily have to be a blog. Blogs are a feature the client has requested but they haven’t stated whether it is to be restricted to particular persons or if all users should be allowed to post (I will have to check this).

I’d appreciate it if you have any suggestions as to how this may be achieved or if you have any objections to use writing code (maybe a module) to achieve this?

    Thanks,

Well, again, if they are registered users posting to existing blogs then the Standalone entry form is the solution.

Restricted to some users or all registered users isn’t an issue either - that can be handled with member groups and template privileges.

But if the requirement is providing personal blogs to users then again it’s not a coding/functionality issue, it’s a licensing issue.

Leslie is really the guy you need to speak to for the final say - an email to sales would be the route to take there.

To echo Michael, please email .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) with the details of your project and they’ll be able to help you with the licensing issues.  The Discussion Forum module and Wiki are two other avenues for allowing community site contribution, incidentally.

    Michael and Derek,

Thanks for your replies. I have E-mailed Sales as you have suggested. Blogging doesn’t have to be the solution - we just need the ability to post a single item which may contain text, images or videos and to which comments may be added; how it is done we do not mind. We’ll see what the outcome is with the E-mail.

    Thanks.

That sounds right up the Wiki’s alley, Stephen, as you could even have categories for activities, geographical area, etc., all managed by the users themselves.

You might also want to take a look at this post SAEF without being logged in. You would still need to obey the license rules though.

    Best wishes,

    Mark

The forum may just be the ticket for you, since there is no control panel needed and it is extremely flexible - check out our forums..

    Almost 140,000 posts!

Also, the licensing thing is a bit confusing. I think there is no problem setting up a blog and allowing a bunch of users to post to it - that is not like myspace, etc…..rather is it multiple authors to one blog. Yes, you can use a stand-alone entry, but you can also easily use the control panel…which comes up in a limited form to these users.

Here is an example blog where I have five authors. I also have a Press Release section with , in theory, dozens of authors (folks can post their own PR).

Again, I think this is functionality designed into EE, and not an abuse of the license.
