I’m looking at moving a few blogs from wordpress + zenphoto installs to expression engine.  The only thing holding me back, however, is the glacial pace at which features are being added to the gallery module.  I realize that I can use a ‘weblog’ to hold images and write some custom code for some of the things I’m looking for but (individually) I just cannot justify the time at the moment.  A quick look in the feature requests forum suggests I am not alone in some of these requests.

exif/ipct data: In batch processing I’d like to be able to have fields automatically entered based on meta-data and not be prompted at all.  How about the ability to batch upload a .zip file?

It seems that the solspace plugin helps with some of this but most of it seems like obvious functionality for the gallery module itself.

    Cheers,

It really does depend on your needs Dave. I am currently working through moving my gallery from Gallery2 to EE’s Gallery Module. It looks like it will meet my needs, albeit with some customer plugins, so from my standpoint it will be good.

    What are your requirements?

And I promise you, EE staff read each thread and make decisions based on their content, so that if enough people talk about the Gallery module, there will mostly be some enhancements.

I will agree that the Gallery module in ExpressionEngine could be much more than it is.  On the other hand, its original purpose was not to be the end all greatest photo gallery, but instead to give people the ability to have a dedicated photo gallery on their site with some basic abilities like resizing, thumbnails, captions, and categories.  As you add more features beyond what we consider required, you are targeting a smaller and smaller audience with those features.  And then with the spread of photo sharing sites like Flickr and Smugmug, many people who would be using the Gallery are drawn to the community aspects of those hosted sites.

All that being said.  A Mr. Rick Ellis was discussing some changes to the Gallery module and the File Manager in the Publish area at the end of the summer for 2.0, so we do have thoughts such as yours on our minds.
