    Hello!

I have been unable to create photo galleries for some reason.  I cannot create an entry in the New Entry tab and in the Batch Entries tab.

Every time I click on submit, I get an internal server error, Error 500.  The files are being moved to the appropriate folders (I checked via FTP) so I know that part did work.

The gallery categories do not have any entries, apparently because the 500 error occurred between the copy of the image to that folder and before updating the category count.

Any ideas on how I can fix this?

    Thanks!
    Todd

Are you able to upload an image on the the regular ‘Publish’- i.e., upload one to a weblog entry?  And what build/version are you running?

    Hi Robin,

Thanks for your reply.  I attempted to create a weblog and went ahead and uploaded an image.  The upload worked.  I then placed the image.  It worked fine (preview shows that it did work).

THen for a differet weblog, I tried to upload an image and resized it.  It caused the same error:

Error 500 - Internal server error
An internal server error has occured!
    Please try again later.

For the resize, I reduced the pixels from whatever it was to 1024x768 (with constrain proportions checked) and overwrote the original image.  This caused the error.  If I say to resize that same image but create a separate copy, I also got the same error.

I suspect any resize operation either in New Entry, Batch Entries, and Weblog will cause this same error.

I have EE Commercial 1.6.0 and will upgrade it to 1.6.1 this coming Saturday.

    Thanks,
    Todd

Yep- it’s definitely the resize.  The upgrade is a good idea before digging too deep.  Also- try it with a small image- just grab one of the smilies and upload, resize.  See if that works- we’re looking for memory issues there.

Also- what are your image resize prefs- I mean- what image protocol are you using?

    Hi Robin,

Awesome.  I just tested with a very small image.  I was able to resize it from 64x50 to 640x500.  No problem.  Sounds like you’re right—a memory issue.

The images I’m using come directly from a camera (not sure what kind though… these were sent to me on a CD).  They all have at least 3000x2000 pixels resolution.  It sounds like I need to use an image application to batch convert them to a smaller size prior to uploading… an extra step.  Ah well.

By the way, the host that the site is on only has GD compiled into PHP, so that’s what I’m using.  The PHP’s memory limit is 40M.

I’ll go ahead and try and run the images through a batch converter to reduce the size of the images.  They are all over 1MB (some 2MB or 3MB).

    Thanks again,
    Todd

Update for others should they get this same error when trying to resize or do batch entries.

You would need to verify that your original images are not too big.  Mine were at least 1.5 MB (highest was about 3.7 MB).  I ran these through Irfanview, a freeware image program.  It had a batch conversion feature (press B when you are in Irfanview).  I downsized the image resolutions from over 3000x2000 to 1024x768 and saved as JPGs.  The file size went down 90% which allowed EE to successfully process these images.

It’s a memory problem like Robin opined earlier in this thread.

    I’m now in business.  😊

    Thanks Robin!

Thanks for checking back, Todd. Glad you were able to reduce the size of the images.

I experienced this same problem for a site hosted at 1and1 using one of their shared plans. Templates using either the Photo Gallery module or lumis’ Image Sizer plugin were both throwing “Internal Server Error - Error 500.”  Reducing the original image file size fixed the problem.

Yep- the really big images- we’re talking hxw issue more than an image size issue- take a ton of memory.  It’s one of the first things to consider when you run into the above.  I’ll generally test with a small image to see if things work- if they do- odds are very good it’s a memory issue.

Going to go ahead and close this one out.
