    Hello peeps,

I have been having issues with my vps with webfusion and they have finally driven me over the edge. I was wondering if anyone can recommend a reliable hosting company that know what there doing and also allow for multiple domains to be hosted (Sorry Engine Hosting) on one account?

I have had a look around but I’m getting nowhere fast. any ideas?

There are so many.  What are your needs?  What is your level of knowledge?  What is your budget?

You should ask over here http://www.webhostingtalk.com/ - some gurus there.

Thurting has a great recommendation - but honestly don’t tread in those waters till you have:

    - Budget
    - Needed resources
    - Future growth estimate
    - Thick skin

You’ll never find a “really good” host for “really cheap”... and if you want reliability you’re going to have to pay.

Let me make a recommendation of a host NOT to choose. ServerPronto is a horrible choice. They are a dedicated server host in the VPS price range. $30/month for the starter package. The service is ok if you know how to admin your own server. The problem comes if you try to cancel. They have this absurd cancellation process. The ONLY way to cancel involves faxing your driver’s license and credit card to them! Supposedly for security reasons. And you have to give them 30 days notice. If you don’t, and try to stop paying, they will slap you with a $300 penalty (1000% they monthly rate) and turn it over to collections. Once you cave to their threats and try to follow the crazy policy, it doesn’t guaranty they will stop billing you. I’ve been trying to cancel for 3 months. It sucks because I was excited about when I first signed up and even posted about it on these forums. I wish I had googled them before signing up because a ton of other people have complained about the exact same problems. What a nightmare it has turned out to be.

Thanks Guys for getting back to me. To answer some of your questions:

    - My budget is around 25-40 pounds (50-80 dollars)
    - My requirements are LAMP5, root access, host 20 sites minimum & anything else is cool.
    - The hosts them self must be reliable, good customer service & have a quick response     time.

@joeles: you really had some troubles! And I thought I was getting messed about 😊

@Code Arachn!d: Thats why I thought I’d ask here, as I assume alot of you guys have faced this problem at some point or another and your from the same work sector. Also I’ve hung round this forum for a while (silently) and I don’t feel like the annoying noob asking selfish questions and never posting again.

I’m going to have a better look at mediatemple.net as this host seems to come up quite often any more advice would be appreciated. thanks again

I have hosted sites on MT GS and DV.  I don’t recommend the GS if you need a shared hosting solution, but the DV is quite good for the price.  It comes with a lot of goodies already installed for you, but as with any dedicated solution you will have to get dirty with the command line at some point.  The support is excellent though, so you should always check with them first and in many cases they will be able to handle things for you.

They have a very supportive user base who like to talk them up, but they are def. not the end all be all of hosting.  You should def. look around before making a final decision.  Good luck.

I don’t recommend the GS if you need a shared hosting solution,

Why? I love the GS, it is stellar and never had an issue.

I whole-heartedly recommend surpass hosting. I’ve had an account with them for more than two years and have never noticed any major stumbling blocks.

I had a shared account with MT before the GS so I had to go through the initial migration and all of the hiccups that came with it.  I don’t run anything on the GS now, so I can’t comment on its current state.  However, if you are looking for shared hosting, I think there are better alternatives.  I usually send people to DreamHost if they need lightweight shared hosting.  I have hosted a bunch of sites with them and have never had any issues aside from some downtime once in a blue moon.  Their price point is unbeatable (using a promo code you can get a year of hosting 500GBx5TB for $20 - obvs. it is an oversell, but by the time someone got to that level they would have outgrown a shared server anyway).  DH also has good support, good wiki, good community, and is transparent about the status of their servers.

Since you seem to be based in the UK, I would look at EuroVps. I don’t host with them now, but I will get a VPS from them in Dec. Prices are competitive. You’ll likely get pings in the low 20s from the UK (servers in Amsterdam). It makes a difference, compared to a location in the US.

If you are comfortable getting your hands a little bit dirty with linux then i recommend the 1and1.co.uk dedicated server “root package”.

You can get them with fedora core 6 and plesk (100 domain licence) and they are on sale at the moment for about £41 i think.

I love mine. It has been very reliable and i am very impressed with the basic extras i get.

    1. a 160gb seperate ftp backup server
    2. Web admin console for rebooting, booting into recovery systems, console access etc etc
    3. Support (they say you don’t get full support as you are managing it yourself but they have always helped me in times of need)
    4. The server is in germany and is blazing fast. I think i’ve had 10 megabit download speeds from it when i tested it in the past.
    5. Even the entry level server is well specced in my opinion.

I should get a job as their salesman, i would be great.

Thanks Guys, now I’m spoiled for choice! I’m leaning towards EuroVPS had a chat with a guy over there and they seem nice and knowledgeable. Also surpass hosting seem interesting but need a bit more information back.

The one I’m not good for is 1and1, a good friend of mine that knows how to get his geek on ran into loads of trouble with them but I guess thats the case with most hosts (someones always had trouble).

I’ll let you know when I finally make my decision 😊

I have a VPS on Slicehost.  Go ahead and TRY to find a bad review on them.  They are so popular they can’t even keep up with demand, so you will have to wait in line to get an account.
