I am having problems updating and insert images in using both the Gallery mod and the file upload function from the publish page.  Here are the details:

Gallery: I fill in all required fields, and use either the browse or select existing image method to select the image.  However, when I select submit the EE CP just goes to a white “screen” (page).  After inspection I have determined that the file is uploading but think this may be because of thumbnail creation.

Publish Page: Similar to the problem listed above.  I can select an image, it uploads, but when I attempt to resize the CP goes to a blank page.

General: I have opted to to use GD as I know it is installed on the server.

    Any ideas?

Let’s debug using the publish upload- it’s a little simpler and I’m betting it’s the same core problem in both areas.

My first guess would be a memory issue- second guess, some other php error.  In ‘Admin- Utilities- PHP Info’ can you check the memory allocated to php?  If it’s the default 8MB, I’d try increasing that and see if it helps.  You can also try uploading/resizing a very small image.  Heck- upload one of the smilies and see if it works with that.

The memory limit is set (default) to 16M.  Hah!, using a small image (smiley) worked.  The images that didn’t work were in the 350 to 450 k range.  Could this be the problem?

Yep- if you can resize a tiny one and not a more normal one?  It’s memory (or timing out)- see if you can get the memory upped to 32MB.  Image manipulation just sucks up a lot of php memory.
