i am working on a magazine layout and since i am putting up all the articles right now i wanted to know if i could author them by another person’s account.  also can there be articles authored by names that aren’t members?

    Do this first.

Then in Publish or Edit, go to the Options Tab and change the Author by using the drop down list.

    That should do it.

awesome that helped but what about authors who aren’t members?  can you just write a display name you want as the article for that site?

If they are not members, then you could create a custom field drop down list with each of their names.  And then of course place the custom field single variable in your code.

You cant use {author} though, because it will pull the member author who wrote the article.  You in this case.

    Update:

I would use either or; Not both, because it will just get more complicated than it has to be.

does it have to be a drop down menu or can there be just an additional field?  if say someone writes one article i dont want to have over the years hundreds of names in a drop down menu.

Doesn’t have to be a drop-down, it can just be a blank text input field (like any other) you enter the name into.

Try a search in the docs for custom fields, the first result is the one you want. =)

    Sorry about that.

To my knowledge, no.  I believe the author name for that entry will stay in the database until changed.
