When my editors try and edit other editor’s articles, the system displays an error saying “The selected author is invalid”. I set the permission levels for Editors already to be able to modify and edit other editor entries so I am not sure what’s causing the problem.

Check that each weblog has a status group assigned to it- in ‘Admin- Weblog Admin- Weblog Management’.  And that your group has permission to assign the statuses.

If that’s not it- what build are you running?

(Edited to start with the obvious ones first!)

Are the editors included in the ‘PUBLISH page multi-author list’ ?

If not, that’s the first place you’ll want to look, as the system won’t allow them to edit another user’s entry until they are part of that list.

An added quirk is if the entry is authored by a super admin, even if the user is in the list, they can’t leave the author as the super admin author… they MUST change it to themselves or someone else on the list.

    Confused? 😊

    Hi Robin,

I double checked the status group settings for my editors within CP Home ›  Admin ›  Weblog Administration ›  Status Groups ›  Statuses ›  Edit Status and my editors have full status inclusion.

    My build is currently 1.6.0

    Butcher,

    Here’s what I found out…

You were right about the Multi-Author list, but in order to actually change an entry by a particular author you must first change the entry options author to the new editor who will be making the changes under the options tab, then can go back and edit the entry.

The only other detail I noticed is once the entry is saved the editor needs to go back and change the “whois” author on the article back to it’s original owner/editor.

Outside of this I haven’t found a better solution which would allow the editor to edit the entry by another author without actually changing the “whois” dropdown data and saving as its original author, without actually having Super-Admin privelages, so it looks like that’s exactly what you were saying.

    Robin,

Is there any way we can get this part fixed?...

Yep- I was out in left field on the status bits.  But Derek noted that this has been tweaked recently.  What build are you running?  I’d try an upgrade if it isn’t the latest- I note in the 0815 build:

*Further tweak to entry author validation so that checks occur only if the author is being changed

Note dead sure it’s related to the above, but worth a look.

Yep- but check the build.  It’s in the footer as well.  The latest build is 20070815.

Just for followup clarification, the author only needs to be in the multi-author list if they are going to need to be available to change to.  Existing entries will not remove the author or trigger an invalid author, and author validation will only occur when the user editing an entry is attempting to change the original author.

Thanks Derek. I did notice that right after I added everyone else from my list. Good thing too, as I was just about to advise my client otherwise 😊
