Can User Messages be changed from a seperate page to a server-side redirect?

There are various user messages which are displayed when a member logs in, submits a form etc. These are displayed as a seperate page with the message and a link and/or meta refresh to redirect the user the appropriate page. I would rather skip this step and have the message displayed in a message area in the next page.

Is there a way to set the system to do this using the normal configuration options? If not how can I go about implementing this using plugins/extentions?

Would adding php code to the User Message Template be an appropriate method?

    TIA

There isn’t a way to ‘ditch’ them that I know of- Derek lays out a good explaination of why they’re necessary here, and I’ve yet to see a workaround (nor can I think of one).  So- php in the message template wouldn’t be an option (and wouldn’t be parsed anyway without a hack).

They are easy to style to fit the rest of the site, however.  In general, that’s the approach I’d take.
