    I found that you can upload jpgs to the gallery, and if you don’t resize anything, metadata is preserved. But if you resize, it gets wiped !

    (pls anybody, correct me if i’m wrong)

    btw, same applies if you embed a flickr img url. you get the img rendering, but no metadata.

    In truth- I’m not dead sure, so have called in some backup!  We’ll dig in and figure it out.

    Ok, I was able to figure out where I had dealt with this - it was my own bug report, after all.  The thread is here and Paul explains the issues involved.

    So, if i’ve understood correctly [URL=http://ellislab.com/forums/viewthread/4411/]Paul’s last post[/URL], this issue is still running unsolved ?

    Well it’s solved in that there is no current solution.

    Your full sized images will retain their metadata - but the resized images (medium and thumbs) are created by PHP and the metadata information is not written back into them. If you need to pull out said metadata you can do so from the full-sized image as those are uploaded, untouched by any image-processing.  I pull EXIF data into my pages by just calling the information from the full image URL.

    This is unfortunate. The initial idea is about semantics and seo. Although there is nothing official about this, there are some discussions about search engine spidering embedded metadata.

    So, the aim was about getting SEO friendly and having metadata on all jpegs.

    Then again, we’re working on calling headline(title)+caption(summary)+keywords(tags) from jpegs too, especially for large image gallery, obviously offering to photographs and artists alike to save time.

    So, would you have some directions to point me onto this topic please ?

    Well, if you can excuse a little bit of seeing my personal site, see this image as an example. It’s entirely work-safe. =)

    See the exif data under it? That is done with Lowe’s Exif Plugin and uses this code:

    {exp:exif image="http://www.lisajill.net/photos/{filename}" show_all="no"}
    <div class="exif">Taken on {date_taken} with a {camera}. The exposure was {exposure},
    the aperture was {aperture}, focal length was {focal_length}, at
    an ISO speed of {iso_speed}.</div>
    {/exp:exif}

    As you can see, it’s dynamic - pulling EXIF data out of an image that has it, and showing only what I want. In theory you could do this with IPTC but there isn’t currently plugin for that.  I wish there were, so hey. =)  You could always build one, certainly.
