Help with Upgrading to EE 1.6

I got Expression Engine Hosting about three weeks ago, as they ‘install’ Expression Engine.  They did a pretty good job.  But now that the new version of EE is released (1.6) they will not do an upgrade.  Not even if I paid them!  *shakes head*

I looked through the upgrade instructions, and seems pretty straight forward, though the prospect of working with these .php files has aged me considerably in the last day.

My question is this:  Are these ALL the actual steps to complete the install?
Or, are there some steps omitted, which are so obvious to techies?  I am not a techie, but can do simple html (if given instructions!) and can follow a recipe book.

Once I am in the midst of upgrading, if something goes wrong, is there “live chat” or some other option, where you could bail me out! (!!!)

Finally, (should have been first): Can I pay someone from Tech Support to do the upgrade for me? (in your spare time?) I am just not comfortable (and don’t have the budget) posting this on the jobs site!

    Hi Arun,

First, the upgrade steps are so easy, that a child can do the job.
If you don’t like to do it yourself, you can contact one of the people of the pro network or place a topic on the Expression Engine Job Board

But, the EE people has made the upgrade very easy, so i would say, try it yourself. If you get errors, there are always nice people on this forum who can help you with your problems.
Be sure that you backup up your database and backup your path.php and config.php files.

Arun, hope you had some success doing the upgrade.

It really is not too difficult. But do it slow and when you’re not in a rush. 😊  Go over each step slowly and methodically. And of course, backup your database, your templates, any extra plugins/extensions, etc….....

Great advice from jo22 and pctje. It really is not that painful to upgrade to 1.6, but if you’d prefer to have someone else upgrade for you, you can contact someone in the community for help.

Do you know how to back up your database?

Thank you all.  It was very heartening to hear encouraging words from many in this community.
Once I get back from our family gethering, I am going to devote a whole morning to this installation and give it a shot.

I see the potential of EE to help me convey my message(s) to my audience - and with time and a little patience I may actually learn how to use and explore the full potential of EE.

Sue, I have seen the link to backup my blog from the Admin page.  Is there a way to backup the templates?  And do I have to back up the mailing list as well?

If you are taking the time off, have a wonderful looong weekend!

Arun, there are some instructions for backing up your database in the User Guide: Database Backup  It will backup all essential data.  If you do that, plus backup all of your files, you’ll be in great shape.  Please let us know if you need more detailed assistance.

    Yoo Hoo!
Survived the install with a little hand holding from friends.  It was really easy.
It seems to work fine - so i guess I did not goof up.  (will find out in the next few days).

Thank you to all here (and those who offered help in private posts) for giving me the confidence and guidance in this installation.

    Onwards to the next micro-step.
    😊
