My boss has told me to build our new EE website on my desktop first, as far as I’m aware it being serverside php this isn’t possible, any idea what he means?
Much appreciated.

Is your existing site on a linux or windows server? If you are on a linux server you will want to download MAMP, which allows you to essentially run a linux server environment on your local drive. You can install EE into that and build it out as a development site.

Hi Ash,
To build a new EE website on you desktop first install, install a local web server like Wamp for windows, Mamp for Mac, i don’t remember the Unix
Wamp link: http://www.wampserver.com/en/
After you’ve installed your local web server, you will have (Apache, MySQL and PHP), as a real server. Nice to build a website locally and when it’s ready to put in on a physical server. ExpressionEngine works very well on Wamp.

Once I’ve built it on my desktop is there a way of transferring that to the existing websites account, therefore replacing the old website seemlessly.
I really appreciate the timely responses by the way, certainly not like the Wordpress forum :0)
Server is Apache I believe.

Anyone on the transferring from desktop to actually online?
Can it be transferred, or is it a copy and paste exercise?

Once your whole local website is built, you can upload it via ftp on the remote site server.
. It’s not very difficult, the basic structure of a local server and a remote are quite similar.
