MSM Login Problem - correct credentials redirects to login screen rather than CP Home

I’ve read a fair amount of stuff on this problem but haven’t been able to come up with a solid answer and am still experiencing trouble.

Setup: EE 2.6.1, MSM 2.1.5, running on Media Temple. Browser: Chrome. Notable modules/extensions/fieldtypes: Structure, Low Reorder, Playa, Matrix, Stash

Problem: Correct credentials redirects to login screen rather than CP Home.

Workaround: Clearing my browser cache (deleting cookies and emptying the cache) will allow me to log in. However this is not a tenable solution for myself or the client logging in. Also, this solution does not allow me to login to any of the sites (site2.com/admin.php, site3.com/admin.php) etc.

How do we fix this?

Additional info - for some reason when I try to change the Control Panel Session Type and User Session Type to anything other than “Session ID Only” (for CP) and “Cookies Only” (for User) I get a “Preferences Updated” message but the values show back up just as they were before.
