I have a lead who wants a site created similar to gumtree.com.au

It will basically be a member system where they can advertise something they want to sell, and there will also be a system where they can feature their item for a fee. I’m guessing they will want some location based searches, and will need a good category/directory system as searches will need to be based on a number of variables.

We are just in the initial discussions at the moment. I have previously built more simple websites on EE, so just wondering if people think EE will be up to the task, and if so - any recommendations for the best extensions/methods for creating something like this.

    Thanks!

There’s nothing to stop you building something similar with EE.

Set up some channels for the content, and add one or more category groups as required. The key to a site like this is using the (included) Safecracker module so members can post entries to the directory or classifieds channels.

I’d use an addon for managing registrations and profile editing such as Freemember, Solspace User or Zoo Visitor
For flexible search look at Low search, or Solspace search

That’s really helpful, thanks for that.

And in regards to a basic payment system where they can check a box to promote the ad for a fee, would there be a good extension that could build into the workflow? Or using simple commerce?

You could indeed build that in, how you do it really depends on the process and what parameters allow a free option.

The easiest way is to get the free or paid option at the beginning of the process, then you can redirect to an appropriate page/template.
