Strange question I know but I have an existing EE2 site that is being migrated and redesigned. The database export was 500mb. The site does have a couple thousand entries. Does this seem like a normal size of database. Reason I ask is the site has also been getting hit with DOS attacks and I am wondering if it is possible there has been some sort of sql injection and I should make an effort to export and import individual entries into a fresh install.

Well, the question isn’t so much about whether or not a 500MB db is “normal.” If there is 500MB of data in it that is properly there, then it is what it is.

Having said that, you should optimize the database, and see where that leaves it.

CP Home -> Tools -> Data -> SQL Manager -> Manage Database Tables

Not knowing what constitutes an entry for your site, or what sorts of Add ons you may be running, it’s hard to say if your database is bloated or infected. But you can always peruse your export with a text editor, and see if there is anything unusual there.

Good advice. I am also just noticing that there are quite a few tables still in there from the original EE1 site (it was upgraded some time ago) things like field frame types etc so it is probably bloated.

If you use Comments (and have a lot of them) that can quickly amass a lot of megabytes worth of data, same goes for the Discussion forum addon if you use that.
