    Hi all,

I’ve got some questions regarding the MSM.

First some explanation of what we want to achieve:
At this moment we have developed a site for a kitchen store, that site is running EE2.

We now have 2 more domain names registered, where each domain name targets a specific target group and a corresponding price range.

So content wise on each additional domain we want to show specific kitchens for the specific target group and on the main site (which is already running) all kitchens are displayed.

How to achieve this with category’s channels and templates is not the problem.

I have some questions about setting this up the right way.

To clarify some details about the domains:
All the domain names are owned by the same business.
All the domain names are hosted at the same ISP.

    The documentation states that:
“All Sites must reside on the same server”

My single installation looks like this:

    └── domain1.com
      ├── admin.php
      ├── index.php
      ├── images
      ├── system
      └── themes

The other domains registered are not looking like this:

    └── domain1.com
      ├── admin.php
      ├── index.php
      ├── images
      ├── system
      └── themes
    └── domain2.com
    └── domain3.com

They are host at the same ISP but have there own FTP and probably server? (or shared server?) (is there a way to check?)
Is that a problem? And do they need to be moved?

And what is the explanation i can give the ISP for the part of moving the domains (if needed)?

I’ll hope you can clarify some things for me, and let me know if i’am on the right track!

    Thanks in advance,
    Steven

Well, the easy answer Stevenb, is that you need to point multiple domain names to the same hosting account in order to use MSM. Some hosting providers may not want to do that if they control your domain name registration and dns.

So if you want to use MSM, you’ll need to figure out this first part. I use MSM in such a situation, but I have the domains registered at a separate domain registrar, NetSol, and I can use masked domain forwarding to point as many domains as I want to directories or subdirectories at this particular hosting account.

WHat to tell your ISP? That if he won’t accommodate you, that you’ll be looking for either a new hosting service, or a way to work around his restrictions. In any case, if you want/need to use MSM, he’s only going to be billing you for one account, max.

    Hope this helps,
