For some reason EE (2.5.3) will not allow you to select a Template Group (left side pane) directly from the Template Manager page. To access a template I have to select Design > Templates > Editor to get to a specific group. Anyone run into this and have a solution?

That does sound very odd.
Can you please try uploading your themes folder again? And please make sure that the permissions are correct on the folder.
Please let me know how that goes.
