I’ve launched many unix/linux EE sites, but am having a trouble with Windows now.

A client has supplied a Windows 2008 Server with PHP 5.2.17, MySQL 5.0.77 and Apache 2.2.23 The site is up and running using FastCGI but we have run into a problem. A user can log into the admin control panel, but any submission of an entry page (normal content editing) causes the server to hang.

    Apache error log

[Wed Nov 07 18:24:24 2012] [warn] [client {ip}] (OS 10054) An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host. : mod_fcgid: cant get data from http client, referer: http://{domain}/system/index.php?S=791eb0bd3d0f844e252a23df048f9cc287d36adf&D=cp&C=content_publish&M=entry_form&channel_id=2&entry_id=28&
[Wed Nov 07 18:26:01 2012] [warn] mod_fcgid: process 4584 graceful kill fail, sending SIGKILL

I read that this may be caused by a permissions error with the temp upload folder, but checking that didn’t seem to help the problem, unless we made a mistake with the permission settings.

Again, I am definitely not a Windows sys admin and no very little about setting up an Apache server on Windows, so any responses should be written with that in mind. Please don’t take any information for granted.

This is urgent as the site has been ready to go live for a week and we can’t push it live until the admin is working!

Thank you very much in advance.

    Hi Ted,

I’m sorry for your trouble with Windows.

Is there any way to run PHP as an apache module rather than FastCGI? We see noting but trouble when it comes to PHP as FastCGI

You are in good company. We aren’t experts at Windows either. I would certainly start with asking is PHP can be enabled as an apache module.

Which host are you working with?

    Cheers,

We first tried to get PHP to run as a module, but after a struggle it seemed that using FastCGI was the easier/better way on Windows. We could try again, but we seem so close now, I’d hate to take the step backwards since the rest of the site is functioning.

It’s not on a separate hosting service…the client manages a bunch of servers, providing application hosting and other online services to their clients. Because of this, we thought they would be able to configure the server, but they took a new server and installed the raw materials and now are stating that they are unfamiliar with the open source technologies and putting it back in our court, but as mentioned, we are not Windows IT guys and have hit this wall. Frustrating, since the site itself has been very well received by the client and we had a smooth time creating it. What should be the easy part has become the stumbling block.

We still would love any advice on where to look to solve this problem as opposed to starting from scratch. We have suggested just letting us host it on one of our normal hosting accounts, where we could get it running very quickly.

    Hey Te3d,

That is probably going to be the best move. If you are able to get it running on your normal hosting accounts, I would do that.

I am not good with Windows at all.

    Cheers,

They weren’t experienced with Apache/PHP and we weren’t good with Windows, so we agreed to just host it on our Rackspace servers. Got both the account and site set up in under 30 minutes! Love it.

Ah well, if someone reads this and still has an idea of what went wrong on Windows, I’d be curious but glad to no longer have to worry about it!

    Thanks,

    Ted
