Can a 1.x site and a 2.x site coexist under the same domain?

I’ve been putting off upgrading to 2.x because the upgrade terrifies me. I attempted to do it around the first of the year and my site was down for three days.  We did a complete restore to 1.x version from backups, which left the site still at 1.x.

Today it occurred to me that I might be able to leave the 1.x install alone and do a separate 2.x install in a different folder on the same site.  Can that be done without major problems?  If possible, can I copy the membership table from the 1.x install to the 2.x install so the members have access to the new install?  By the way, I would disable login and registration on the 1.x install.

    Is this a crazy idea?

    Hey Jeff,

I believe that this would work. Under the same domain is fine, in different folders of course, they both could not live at the root and they need a different DB, but it should work.

The more desirable route is a development server and then a staging server. That would be cleaner and more controllable.

Is there anything else I can help with?

    Cheers,
