PHP error with file image field

This question may be related to a resolved thread.

We’ve recently updated a site to 2.5.3 and are getting this error:

    A PHP Error was encountered
    Severity: Notice
    Message: Undefined index: filename
    Filename: libraries/File_field.php
    Line Number: 77

Unlike in the related issue, we don’t have any commas in the filenames concerned. We are however using a number of other plugins on this page - matrix, playa, wygwam and then perhaps a more unusual one in EP Better Workflow.

Having spent the last hour or so playing around with the add-ons I’m thinking this might be specific to better workflow, but perhaps also related to changes made in 2.5.3 that seem to block entry edits if a required file field (already holding an image) can’t be uploaded to by the current user (https://support.ellislab.com/bugs/detail/18276).

I’ll raise the issue with Better Workflow and see if they can help.

The image upload fields and the data entry screens seem to be really buggy with this release - we’ve run quite happily previously but clients seem to be having issues when editing entries with previously uploaded images.

Perhaps someone can confirm - if an entry has a file field, must the member have access to upload a file (even if this was a previously created entry with a file already uploaded) to be able to submit the entry?

Hrm- yes, I was about to ask about commas.  Have you narrowed it down to only happening with better workflow?  In other words- if you disable it, does the same error occur?  And does it occur with Superadmins?  Trying to eliminate the permission issue w/that one.

On permissions- you shouldn’t need permission for the directory just to submit- if it’s already been successfully added.  Definitely buggy how it’s acting there (not showing them).

Better Workflow have provided a beta release of their next update to see if this fixes the issue, so I’ll report back.

However, the filenames don’t have commas or spaces. Disabling BWF does seem to remove the problem.

Weird to me that BWF would be having that effect.  But it does sound like something’s going on there.  Thanks for letting us know re: the beta release.  Hopefully that will take care of it.  Look forward to hearing back.
