Hi guys I was hoping I could get some advice on how I could accomplish this. Currently I have a single installation with the MSM add-on and have about 20 sites on the MSM side of it. What I wanted to do is take the default_site and move it to it’s own installation on a new server and leave the current install intact.

What I had planned on doing is just moving the default site to the new server on a clean ee install and then for the current install just wipe it and start from scratch… which I would like to avoid since there so many sites.

HELP and Advice sorely appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi ExpertOrBust,

Thank you for posting on the forums!

What you are wanting to do is completely possible, with one modification.

    Here’s what I recommend:
Make a complete copy of the main MSM site and export the database. The follow the directions for Moving ExpressionEngine to Another Server.

Once you have the main site relocated, you can disable it in the original MSM location. You can’t delete it, since it was the initial site, but you can disable it in Admin-> General Configuration.

Then, in the new location, delete all of the extra sites, leaving only the original site.

Now, go back to the original location. You will need to move the images, system, themes and any shared assets from the original location into the solder of your second MSM site. After that, update the URLs and paths in each of the MSM sites to that they use the second site’s locations.

Don’t hesitate to ask questions along the way, it’s a bit of a process!

    Cheers,
