EE Version 2.5.2 Build Date: 20120606

...logged in as admin, changed permissions for the ‘guest’ account, hit SAVE. Logged out and the error 1 and upon refresh error 2 attached showed up. When you go to the login screen, error home page shows up. Can’t login!

We upgraded recently (two months ago?) but have not had any issues…any ideas or things to check here?

    Thanks,

    P2P Dev Team.

Can anyone help with this? Just need some view of whether this is a known bug, obvious fix, or corrupt nightmare db. Any advice/guidance would be great as we are in the middle of a project with the client. Thanks!

    Hi doubleclick,

    I’m sorry for your trouble.

What permissions did you change? The Guest Group is special to ExpressionEngine and generally should be left alone. All visitors to your site are assigned to the Guest group. Changing permissions for that group can have serious security implications.

I would suggest you undo your changes, copy the Guest group, and make the changes to that group instead.

    Cheers,

    Thanks, Dan…couple quick things:

    - we were lucky we had a staging environment. We copied db fields for the permissions from there and restored things pretty quickly after we found them…but we were thinking, in terms of db restore, do you guys have a best practice anywhere?

    - You mention that the guest group is for visitors…did not know this - is this documented at anywhere and if so, can you direct us to it?

...the reason why we were messing with the Guest group was because the members group was not working as every time we logged in as a member, made an edit to an entry, that entry automatically closed and we had to re-log back in as admin to open it…we thought it was something wrong with the group so went to guest instead - now we know better ;o)...but can you advise if this issue with the members group is something you are familiar with?

Thanks for the tip on managing the groups moving forward…noted.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Oddly, no, it’s not. I’ll make sure we fix that!

Ahhh… mmm hmm. Sounds like the Channel does not have a status group assigned to it. If you make an entry as a Super Admin, ExpressionEngine will always set it “Open”. If you edit that entry as any other user, and the channel has no status group assigned, it will become “closed”.

Admin-> Channel Administration-> Channels: Edit Group Assignments - Make sure to assign a status group for the channel and you should be good there.

    Cheers,

It worked! Awesome - thanks for the tip, Dan. Staying away from Guest. Just created a new group called “Mad Guest!”
