Is it possible to allow commenting to an ATOM feed post without saving the ATOM post as a channel entry?

I have a site and we display a variety of ATOM feeds from Google Reader in a several templates. All works well, but we now have the need to allow users to comment on the ATOM feed posts now.  I know we can import the feed posts into channel entries with DataGrab, but that method seems to have issues at times when a post has unusual data in it from the ATOM feeds.

Is there any way to somehow link a comment to a ATOM post without saving the ATOM post as a channel entry?  I thought about using SafeCracker form and maybe saving a channel entry with the ATOM “url”, “user name”, and a “comments” custom fields but I am wondering if there is some better way.  Is importing the entire ATOM feed the best way or is there some other way to just allow some commenting?  Any third party add-ons are also welcome.

    Thanks, Bryan
