I read online that one of the steps to speeding up expression engine, is to disable/uninstall some of the modules

I have identified 5 of them

    1. referer-  (never use it)
    2. search—never use it—use google search)
    3. statistics (never used them—use google analytics
    4. e-mail (we use no contact forms) but do show the email link of the members’ articles and columns
    5. emoticon (we have comments, but do not allow emoticons)

    can we uninstall

    are there benefits

we host our site on media temple and found it was running way too slow on the basic service with shared SQL. our solution was to go with a gridcontainer which basically allocated reserved bandwith on the SQL server. totally sped up our site by a factor of 5x

You definitely can uninstall the modules you listed.

    Hey there bthom62,

Thank you for asking your question here in the ExpressionEngine forum! Glad to have you here.

Looks like you have some good ideas here.

Can I ask, what prompted the need for performance tuning? Are you seeing some slow downs? If so, where are you seeing those and have you used template debugging and the profiler to pinpoint that?

If the slow down is a real issue, these suggestions will help. You might also consider standing up a Varnish Server in front of your site.

    Just some more ideas.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can help with!

    Cheers,

    Hi Shane

    Thank you

Since we last talked, we have upgraded to 2.4. have set up a CDN account to handle our static content

We have set up caching ( stuff with headers and the htaccess and expiry dates)

    Moved to a bigger server

    Cleaned up our templates

The net result is that we are no longer using 100+ % of our database usage.

However, the site on occasion is still slowing up.

We have to find a way to make our site more secure on its uptime

template debugger is showing me noting

No Idea what a varnish server is

    Thanks

    Hey bthom62,

Wow, lots of changes! Sounds like fun geekery.

Varnish is a caching server that cuts down on redundant requests. (gross over simplification) The article I link to talks about it.

Is there anything else I can do to help?

    Thank you,
