Communicate Module does not support {name} tag

I’ve read elsewhere that you can personalise emails in the Communicate Module by using the {name} field, as used in other system emails. So - assuming you’re sending to a member group - the outgoing message will be sent to “Dear John Doe”, “Dear Jane Doe” etc. according to the member’s screen name.

However, I’m finding that this ONLY works if the email format is set to Plain Text. It won’t work for HTML formatted emails in the Communicate Module. Is this normal behaviour? Why is this not working? Seems like it should parse this one EE field, no matter what the text format of the email message…?

    Any ideas?

    Hello Nick,
    t
Thank you for posting your question here on the ExpressionEngine forums.

Can you tell me what version of ExpressionEngine you are currently using?

I am on 2.5.2 and I cannot reproduce this.

    Thank you,

    Hey Nick,

Are you using a mail list in all your test cases are are you adding {name} to the text area as well?

    Thanks,

    Shane,

No, I’m using a test member group, where each member has a filled-in screen name. I thought it was supposed to use the screen name in the {name} field?

And I know this member group works, because I’m able to send out (and receive) personalised emails when using plain text emails.

    Hi Nick,

I am still unable to reproduce this.

I think we might need to login and take a look.

Before that, can you see if upgrading to 2.5.2 fixes the issue?

    Thank you,

    Shane,

Upgraded to 2.5.2 and tested again, but still experiencing the same issue: HTML emails coming through as “Dear {name}” with no personalisation.
