I’m running EE 2.5.2 on a client’s site, and she noticed that people are unable to post comments under five characters long on her site. And apparently it’s very important that people be able to leave 4-letter comments on her site. So is there a way I can allow shorter comments to be left on the site?

I should also note that Super Admins can leave shorter comments, but regular members cannot. Five-character comments work. Four-character comments do not. The error message received says “Unable to receive your comment at this time.”

    Hi Genevieve,

Um, so OK… wow. I went through just about every preference I can find in the Control Panel and in the Comment Module source code - there is no where we are checking for a minimum length. Even in Member Group preferences.

Can you give me an example of the error they receive?

Are there any Comment related 3rd party add-ons?

    What a noodler…

    Cheers,

    Hi, Dan,

We are running a third-party threaded comments mod on the site, but I set up a separate test template with EE native comment code copied directly from the user docs, and it generates the same error, so I don’t think it’s an issue with the add-on.

The error received just says “Unable to receive your comment at this time.” If you want to try it out for yourself, you can register/log into the site here:
    http://www.captivatedvisions.co.uk/index.php/member/register
And (because the site is sort of “hidden” behind a splash page for the moment) you can try commenting here:
    http://www.captivatedvisions.co.uk/index.php/gallery/layout/life-is-like-a-rodeo (this has the threaded-comments add-on code)
    and here:
http://www.captivatedvisions.co.uk/index.php/gallery/layout-test/life-is-like-a-rodeo (this has the straight-EE comments code).

    Hey Genevieve,

I spoke with the Devs on this. They verified that we don’t have a low-limit on this. However, they offered some suggestions.

Do you have any of the Deny Duplicate Data options enabled? The other suggestions were regarding comment posting intervals.

Might those preferences be affecting this?

    Cheers,

Well, I have no limits on comment posting intervals, but I did change Deny Duplicate Data to no and that seems to have worked. Seems like a strange setting to be related to very short comments, but I guess as long as it works, I won’t question it! 😊 Hopefully I’m all set now! Thanks!

    Hi Genevieve,

Yep, I can see in the EE source code that the error you’re seeing is one that the system throws when it receives duplicate data, and that’s the only thing that triggers it. It’s not related to length at all, but my assumption is that shorter examples that a person might type in the comments to test them just have a higher likelihood of being the same as an example they typed before.

Hopefully that clears up any remaining confusion!
