Unable to sync directories after FTPing new files to said directory

    Hello,

Back when I first installed EE, I was able to sync my image directories. Now, after I’ve added new images…I can’t sync the directories to “see” those new images.

I’m on a Linux server. GD is installed. PHP version 5.3.0, MySQL version 5.1.63-cll.
    I’m running EE 2.5.2.

The path names are correct. The directories, all their files and subdirectories, are set to 777.

    Hello Lesli,

I am sorry to hear you are running into this problem.

How are you uploading these images? Via FTP or in the Control Panel?

    Please let me know.

    Cheers,

I’m uploading these images using FTP. (It’s easier to do that - have two connections open at once, upload files to multiple directories, uploading two and three dozen images at one go. Since I tend to process the images in batches, I’m rarely uploading just one or two, or even just five or six images.)

When I first uploaded these images, it was via FTP. Most of these images were already in place, and owned by my username (rather than ‘nobody’), when I installed EE 2.4 - though I did upload a few dozen additional images before I synchronized the directories for the first time. (Some directories I’ve remained unable to synch, despite them being the same as the other directories in terms of location, parent dirs, permissions, and owners.)

    Hi Lesli,

What happens when you do sync.

Any errors? Does the sync act like everything was successful?

Can you create a new upload destination, upload some photos and then sync just to rule out some funny perms or sticky bits on that dir?

    Thank you,

    Hi Shane,

I do get the same error that so many others have gotten:

“Thumbnail could not be created for the image. Please make sure the thumbnail directory is writable.”

For one of the directories, I did try creating a new upload location, FTP’ed my files into that directory, and tried to sync it. None of the thumbnails was created, and the error repeated one time for each file in the directory:

coll_aleigh_bloom-pp.png: Thumbnail could not be created for the image. Please make sure the thumbnail directory is writable.

kit_benefit_eye-wanna-pp.png: Thumbnail could not be created for the image. Please make sure the thumbnail directory is writable.

...and so on, for the 38 files that were new to that directory.

When I very first installed EE 2.4, and first tried synching up the directories, 13/18 worked and 5/18 didn’t. Now that I’ve uploaded new files to some of the directories - including some that previously successfully synched - I can’t get the directories to re-synch up.

For one, I even tried deleting the _thumbs subdirectory that EE had previously created, making sure the directory and all contents were 777, and tried re-synching. Failure. (Though curiously, when I go to place a file into a channel field from that directory, I still see the former list of files. And that’s what I’m most concerned about: being able to see a list of the files I have in a given directory, using the EE CP interface.)

    Hey Lesli,

Are you doing any image manipulations for these files? Any watermarks?

Just for kicks, can you run the Server Wizard? These errors are so common when GD is not installed or is the wrong version. I know you said that GD is good to go, but just curious.

Are you able to get at system logs at all? Wondering what the logs say.

Can you turn debugging on if it’s not already turned on?

To turn debugging on please go to your Control Panel and navigate to Admin->System Administration-> Output and Debugging. Please set the last two settings, which are “Display Output Profiler?” and “Display Template Debugging?”, to yes.

If nothing pans out from the above, I may need to login and take a look.

    Thank you,

I am not doing any resizing or watermarking. I do all of that in Photoshop, and upload the optimized, thumbnailed images to the server. All I need to do with EE on these things, is sync the directories so that I can see an in-CP listing of all the images available to me in each of the upload locations.

I ran the Server Wizard back about a year ago when I was thinking of upgrading from 1.6.9 to 2.1.0…but the MySQL and PHP have both been upgraded in that time. I’ll run it again later today and report the results.

I have turned on debugging, but just out of curiosity…why does Template Debugging have to be on?

I then tried to sync one of my directories, with the debugging on. The directory still did not sync, still gave the same errors as before.

Okay - I downloaded the Server Wizard from the link in your post above (just in case anything had changed from the one I downloaded a year ago) and ran it.

Everything came back “Yes”. Required, suggested, and optional were all “Yes.” So server-environment-wise, everything should be fine, correct?
