Hi Shane,
I do get the same error that so many others have gotten:
“Thumbnail could not be created for the image. Please make sure the thumbnail directory is writable.”
For one of the directories, I did try creating a new upload location, FTP’ed my files into that directory, and tried to sync it. None of the thumbnails was created, and the error repeated one time for each file in the directory:

...and so on, for the 38 files that were new to that directory.
When I very first installed EE 2.4, and first tried synching up the directories, 13/18 worked and 5/18 didn’t. Now that I’ve uploaded new files to some of the directories - including some that previously successfully synched - I can’t get the directories to re-synch up.
For one, I even tried deleting the _thumbs subdirectory that EE had previously created, making sure the directory and all contents were 777, and tried re-synching. Failure. (Though curiously, when I go to place a file into a channel field from that directory, I still see the former list of files. And that’s what I’m most concerned about: being able to see a list of the files I have in a given directory, using the EE CP interface.)
