File Title vs File Name

Just a quick question around the File Manager. I’ve had a client who decided that they wanted to name all their images in a way which made them easier to find. The client proceeds to use the File Manager to rename 300 odd images assuming that this would then allow them to browse images with those names when inserting the images through a WYSIWYG etc.

Turns out that the default File Manager window that pops up when using the file field type only allows you to browse using the file name not the file title. Is this a conscious design decision? If so why? Why allow people to set a file title then not actually browse by those names when it comes to inserting an image.

Hopefully there’s a way around this, or something we can change (in core files if necessary) to make it so our clients can browse by File Title.

    Cheers,
    Ben

    Hello Ben,

Thank you for posting your question here on the ExpressionEngine forums.

What version of ExpressionEngine are you currently running?

I can understand where you are coming from, though I am able to search for files based on title, which is why I ask what version you are on.

Can you tell me your version and maybe send a screenshot of your search where you are unable to browse by file name?

    Thank you,

    Hi Shane,

Sorry, I should have posted the ExpressionEngine version in the first post, we’re running 2.5.2 — the problem I’m having can be demonstrated in the below two pictures.

In image one (fig 1) we can see the client has changed the File Title to Cultural Centre so it’s easier for them to find, however in image two (fig 2) searching for that when we’re actually inserting the image technically returns the result, but the client has no idea which one it is because the File Title isn’t displayed, just the File Name. This is an even bigger problem with a large list of images they want to browse.

So what I’m trying to understand is the design decision here to show the File Name rather than the File Title, it just doesn’t make sense to me. The File Title field is automatically populated with the File Name when an image is uploaded so for most images they would see the exact same name, but if they have updated the File Title, surely that’s what they want to see throughout the site rather than it being almost useless. To me it makes logical sense to always show the File Title.

Would love to hear the design decision behind this, and also if it’s possible to get this behaviour changed if there wasn’t a good reason for it.

    Hey Ben,

I see it now. It helps if I go to the right spot. 😊

    I agree with you 100%.

Please file a Feature Request and as soon as you do, I will make the Devs aware of this.

    Cheers,
