I’m confused. I worked through the tutorial and posted some “hello world” type content but I don’t see anywhere where you can change CSS to actually design your page. Then I read a post that said most people do their design elsewhere then bring that work into the templates?

Is that correct? Am I supposed to design template pages outside of EE, including references to CSS files, etc. and then copy and past that into a template?

    Hey omigosh,

Thank you for posting your question here on the ExpressionEngine forums.

Your design workflow is totally up to you. Some people work right in the templates while other use external editors and such. ExpressionEngine is a blank canvas in that it operates like a website anywhere else. You have to link to your css file which can be on the server as a file.css or it can be brought into templates.

I think you may benefit from a few short reads. Check out The Big Picture and Getting Started with ExpressionEngine. These are really, really helpful.

If there is anything else I can help with, please let me know.

    Cheers,

    Hi, Omigosh.

I was confused and initially turned off by this also. But then I figured it out.

So for me… I create all my “stuff” (Channel, Channel Fields, Template, etc.) in EE, assign everything accordingly, then save my templates as files to work on them via FTP in my editor of choice (Coda). You’ll be able to write your html, css, in an editor as you would with any old static site.

Create a template, add some html.
Create a css template, add some css.

    Tie the two together… voila!

    Good luck.
