Today while editing an entry i received this error message ‘There was a problem retrieving the XML data” Plus 15 very long lines of text that was mostly gobble-gook.  The screen filled up with so many lines of errors that i was not able to edit the entry and had to use another browser to login and edit the faulty entry.

What was interesting is that a stray ”  ’  ” single quote mark blew up the editor in the CP.  So much error text over a little wee bit of text , in this case a single

    why?

    Hey giovanni,

I am sorry to hear you are running into this problem.

Can you give me a little more info?

What were you entering into the field? Is this in the Control Panel or SafeCracker?

What version of ExpressionEngine are you running?

    Thank you,

I was in the CP editing some html text: There was img entry that had this - width=“240” but the Quote marks were odd in that i had to delete the quotes and re-enter them as they seemed to be non-standard quotes marks. In my site they were rendering a single marks and affecting the rendering of the images. But re-entering the marks was fixing things up as i had done this on other entries.  I highlightged the quotes ”  , replaced them and hit submit…and all hell broke loose. It turns out that single ” was left in the entry that caused the errors to appear.

Using EE 2.5.2 latest build ...  I kept the error message if you want to look at it.

    Hey giovanni,

I am unable to reproduce this.

Can you send me exactly what you entered that caused this?

Are you using any Add-Ons for this entry field?

    Cheers,

I am not using any add-ons or plugins.

The text that i was editing/correcting was this string:

    <div>/div>https://ellislab.com/asset/images/ent-partner-logo/church28.jpg

the issue is that for some weird reason the in this string width=’‘220’’ height=’‘274’’  end up being
dispalyed as width= ’ ’ 220’ ’  height=’ ’ 274 ’ ‘  i.e TWO single quotes marks. When i was editing the entry to fix this anomaly by re-applying double quotes i acccidently left an extra single quote such as:  width=’‘262’ ‘’ height=’‘393’’  and this caused the blow-up.

I am sorry that this is taking up so much time on your part. but i just found it odd that this would cause the error that it did.
It may the type of error that may not come up again.

PS the odd issue with the double quotes is that it ONLY occurs in the width and height declarations. In all the other places the Quote ” ” marks appear as is.

I am unable to reproduce this at all.

Are you able to reproduce again? If so I may want to login and take a look.

Hi - I have been trying to reproduce the error for the past hour and half with no “luck”.

It may have been the case that my major blowup had to with errant character combined with the way i hit the submit button..i.e maybe a combo return submit etc…

I still have about a dozen entries to edit that i know have the strange ’ ’ Character   strings and if it comes up again will let you know.

    cheers
