I am using an EE upload directory for resume uploads that are added through Freeform. I need to have a way to secure these files so that only people within the company can access them and people can’t try and guess filenames or get a link to the file and access them. Is there perhaps a way I could use a .htaccess file inside the directory to password protect it? If I did that would the EE upload functionality still work? Any other ideas?

From what you’re describing, sounds like you just want members to access the uploaded files?

I noticed the VWM Secure Files add-on over at Devot-ee.

Not really. That is a field type, I am using Freeform on the front end to receive these files. Freeform (unfortunately) doesn’t work with EE fieldtypes. Most of the people that would be receiving the files (via a link in email) would not be EE members. Ideally some sort of .htaccess password protect of the directory would be best. But I don’t know if that would actually interfere with the actual EE upload process.

For what it’s worth, if your hosting server uses CPanel, there’s a way to password protect directories.  Probably similar in other CPs.
