For a new installation of v2.5.1 - Build Date: 20120529, I’m just starting to input content. I have a list of 34 categories that I entered in alphabetical order. Yesterday, the sort order in the tab under the edit menu was random. I searched the forums, went back to the control panel and clicked around and somehow or another the sort order returned (wish I knew how).

Today I tried creating a second entry and once again the order of the categories appeared random. Under Admin > Channels > Categories I was surprised to see “custom” selected as the sort order so I changed it to alphabetical and submitted. Ah-ha! I thought, problem solved, as they looked correct under Admin, but when I went back to the Edit screen they are still presented in random order there. Makes no sense to me.

I have the Low Seg2Cat extension installed so for a lark I tried disabling it. No effect on category order, so I tried to Enable it again and couldn’t. When I click Enable, nothing happens. I opened the low2seg php file and it reads enabled => ‘y’ even though the Control Panel shows it as “Disabled.”

So I’m at a loss. Is this an extension conflict? a bug? what? I need to view the categories in alphabetical order as I have 80 entries to create each with multiple categories selected from a long list.

    Hi vmills,

Let’s try a couple of things to get this sorted out.

First, remove Seg2Cat entirely. Take it out of third_party, just to be safe.

Now, go to Admin->Channel Administration->Categories and open a category group. Set the order to Alphabetical and click update. Make sure not to inadvertently click any of the blue arrows in the list.

Go to create a new channel entry and see if the categories are behaving. What was the result?

If everything is in order, download a fresh copy of Seg2Cat to make sure you have the latest and try re-installing. Then check the category order again.

    Let me know the results.

    Cheers,

I did everything you said and still get the wrong sort order. What next?

    Hi Vicki

I wasn’t able to “correct” the issue on your site, and the publish page is the *only* place that is ignoring the sort order.

I am unable to replicate this problem in ExpressionEngine 2.5.2 - I need to ask if you can update to that and see if the issue persists.

Let me know if you have any questions!

    Cheers,
