A few years ago I did a website for a client using ExpressionEngine 1.6.x. Everything worked fine until recently. Now the site is completely blank, including the admin page. I have no idea what happened, I haven’t been involved in managing the website since I completed it, and they also have no idea what went wrong.
The question is, where do I start debugging this issue? I was thinking about upgrading the website to 1.7.2 as a first step (I think it’s 1.6.8 now).

Hey Tudor,
I am sorry to hear you are running into this problem.
It sounds like there may have been some server changes, possibly an upgrade, that broke things for ExpressionEngine.
Have you logged in via FTP to check around a bit? Are the files still there? I would hold off on upgrading until we know what’s going on. Can you get the exact version for me, that will be in the config file, and then give me the versions of PHP, MySQL and Apache? We can go from there.

- The files are on the server, EE is version 1.6.7
- PHP Version 5.2.14
- I haven’t been able to find the Apache version yet. The site is hosted at GoDaddy.com and the server does not seem to return the version (I’ve looked into HTTP headers, phpinfo(), tried curl—head on my terminal, nothing). I am waiting to receive the login info to the GoDaddy control panel, maybe I’ll find out more.

One more info: MySQL is version 5.0.92.

Got some answers from GoDaddy. Apache version is 1.3.33. No recent server changes.
Any ideas?

Hi,
This is really odd. The site was there and now it’s just not showing up any more.
No changes to the server. It just stopped working.
There must be some change somewhere. Is there an .htaccess file in play here?
The files are on the server, do perms look good still?
What if you create a blank html file and put anything in it and point your browser there, does that render?
Please try these few things and let me know.

I got the site working by updating it to version 1.7.3. I believe some files were corrupted, that’s why it didn’t work. Thanks for your help.
