OK, so I thought I had nailed the questions so it looks like I’m beating my own record by one. I’m going to purchase an intro book on EE2 to get up to speed. There’s a book by Ryan Irelan (2010) and Latest Building an ExpressionEngine 2 Site - Small Business (PDF) that is more recent.

I imagine they’re both good but is there a preference? Maybe the newer one is a bit more up to date?

Any recommendation appreciated.

Mike Boyink’s book is the latest, but they are both excellent resources. If I were buying, I’d go with Boyink, but that is a completely unsolicited personal opinion 😉
