Sporadically receiving entry notifications

We have it set up so when one of our blog authors creates a blog entry, two editors are notified via email using the EE native entry notification setting within that channel’s preferences.

Recently, I have been getting complaints that one of the editors is not receiving notifications all of the time.

Any idea what would cause this or how to even begin troubleshooting? I have two email addresses listed and separated by a comma.

    Thanks for your help!

    Hi Jacob,

I’m sorry for the inconsistency you and your clients have experienced with email notifications.

My first step would be to add myself to the list and verify that I am notified correctly. Once that’s clear, take note of the differences in the problem email address.

    1) What domain is the address on?

    2) Are both addresses on the same domain?

    3) What may be different regarding the email client settings between the 2 addresses?

    4) Is there something about the title of a post that may be triggering a spam or junk mail filter for the affected address?

What do you see in ExpressionEngine’s Email Console Log at Tools->Logs->Email Console Log ?

I look forward to your reply!

    Cheers,

Ok. I added myself to the list and did receive the entry notification. The problem is, the notifications are sporadic. Hit and miss. Here are the answers to your questions…

    1) What domain is the address on?
The same as the other 2.

    2) Are both addresses on the same domain?
    Yes.

    3) What may be different regarding the email client settings between the 2 addresses?
No difference. Webmail (Google Apps) is being used to view mail in all cases.

    4) Is there something about the title of a post that may be triggering a spam or junk mail filter for the affected address?
I’ve checked and re-checked the spam folder and did not find them there.

What do you see in ExpressionEngine’s Email Console Log at Tools->Logs->Email Console Log ?
All I see is “There are no cached email messages.”

Ok, this didn’t make much sense so I remotely logged into the users account and found both of the notifications buried in the trash. :-(

What I presume happened is that since the notifications have identical subject lines and were sent on the same day, Gmail grouped them together, the editor read one and hit delete which deleted both.

I am going to update the entry notification template to include the Title in the subject so this doesn’t happen again! 😊

    Thanks for your help Dan!
