slow email spooling - delay in emails being sent

    We’re having some issues with emails being sent from EE.

    1. When setting up new member accounts, there seems to be a delay in the activation email going out.

    2. When resetting passwords, the first email goes out really fast, but the subsequent email is delayed. The mechanism is, they initiate the “reset email”, it sends an “are you sure” email immediately, but when they click on that to verify they want to change the email, it takes an inordinate amount of time for the password to be reset and send the email.

    Is this a spooling issue?

    Running EE 1.6.9.

    Hi sjc80,

    Email can be tricky to suss out, but we can take ExpressionEngine out of the equation with a quick test!

    Go to /system/expressionengine/utilities/email_test.php and copy that file to the root of your web server.

    Now, visit

    <a href="http://mysite.dev/email_test.php">http://mysite.dev/email_test.php</a>

    Run the email test a few times. If those emails come through quickly, then we can look at what might be causing this in ExpressionEngine. If they take varying amounts of time to get through, then it has to do with email on the server, and you should contact your host.

    What email setting are you using in ExpressionEngine?

    Please let me know what you find out!

    Hey Dan,

    An email is not getting sent at all, at least not after 14 hours, so I will track down the host.

    Hey Dan,

    I’ll have to set up the registration emails as SMTP not PHP for now because of Rackspace Cloud issues. I haven’t searched yet. Is that documented anywhere?

    Changing the settings to SMTP worked. You can close this out. Thanks.
