This question may be related to a resolved thread.

    Hello,

I tried upgrading my live site to version 2.4 the other day and I’m still having a lot of difficulties with logging in + short session times, so I had to revert back to my stable version (2.1). Within 10 minutes of doing the 2.4 upgrade our office’s phones were ringing like crazy because people couldn’t log in.

Here are some of the things myself and our users have experienced:

    - Logging in on the front end, seeing the “you are now logged in” message, and then be redirected back to the logged-out version of the main page (they should be redirected to the main page with member content included). This seems to especially affect users who have Compatibility Mode in IE on by default, but I’ve also had it happen to me in Firefox (I’m on version 10.0.2).

    - Getting a blank page upon logging in through the front end.

    - Being looped back to the CP login page, despite entering the correct credentials.

    - Very short session times, mostly in the CP (see this bug). I’ll be modifying something, click on another link, and be booted out for no reason.

The real puzzling/frustrating thing is it is so inconsistent. I started being unable to login, so had a co-worker test it in the same browser on their machine and they had no problems at all. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn’t. I’d say it could be an add-on, but I’ve experienced similar symptoms on a clean 2.4 install on XAMPP.

I am running Cookies Only for both the User and Control Panel session type. I’ve tried adding a Cookie Domain in the settings, which worked for my issues, but didn’t apparently help our users. I am not running MSM.

Apologies for the wordy post, just trying to be as descriptive as possible. If you need any other information to help troubleshoot, please let me know.

Also, could someone PM information regarding private and/or enterprise support? This issue has been delaying a couple of projects we need to get done.

    Thank you in advance.

    Hi gaarmaster,

Thank you for being detailed, every bit of information helps!

Also, could someone PM information regarding private and/or enterprise support? This issue has been delaying a couple of projects we need to get done.

No need to PM, you can email Kevin Smith, Director of Services. He would be happy to discuss the options available to you at this time.

While you outline several areas of concern, I believe they can all be traced back to the bug report you mentioned. Be sure to subscribe to that report to be alerted to a solution.

When you are able to login, have you inspected the cookie that is set? What are you seeing there? Did you set any of the other cookie related values, or only the domain?

    Cheers,

    Hi Heidi,

You may want to check Dan’s post here:

It sounded like you might be experiencing a combination of the Session bug and an issue with Dynamic IPs.

    Just a thought.

    Shawn,

Thank you for the link! I went ahead and tried the update with those settings in config.php and while it was better this time around, we still had a good number of our members who were still unable to login (getting “looped” back around to the non-logged-in version). We were mostly able to solve the problem for IE users by having them add our site to their list of trusted sites and clearing their cookies. This fix did not work for a couple of IE people, and we also had a few Chrome and Safari users having the same issue.

Have you gotten any feedback from your users since you added those settings?

    Dan,

Thank you for Kevin’s contact info! I’ll e-mail him this week.

I’ll go ahead and keep an eye on that Bug Tracker report. I do not have any other settings for cookies, and I tried with and without the cookie domain just to rule that out.

Excellent! That’s the best way to keep up with the progress on this.

If you come across any more information that can help in tracking this down, we would love to hear about on the bug report as well!

    Cheers,
