Is there any way to make the homepage of my site a different template to the ‘default group’ template?
My homepage is static content, but I want the default group template to be used for any pages created on the fly

Hard code your “index” page and create a new template that will be used for all other pages. When creating the new template, duplicate the existing template that you want to use.
