I’m planning to upgrade from 1.7.x to 2.4 and am not clear on what happens to the field I’ve created with Mark Huot’s File extension. Obviously the extension is not supported in 2.0, which has it’s own file upload capability. Once this upgrade is done, do I just go in and change the file type to File for that field using EE’s native file type? Am I correct that nothing changes in the data (the field and its contents remain in the database)? I just want to avoid upgrade nightmares; this is the only extension that should be cause for concern on this site.

    Hi vmills,

Thank you for asking about this. Upgrading EE1 to EE2 with Mark Huot’s file (or ngen file) extension can be a little tricky. There is no official path for this sort of upgrade but there are a couple of resources that can help: I would recommend this thread. Brad provides some excellent code, which I am likely to try out again as I’ve got a few sites to upgrade myself in the next few weeks.

I really can’t emphasize this enough BACKUP your database and files.

I would also take a complete stock of all add-ons in use in your 1.x version to ensure that there is a 2.x compatible version or a replacement for that functionality native to 2.x

As you proceed through the upgrade process don’t hesitate to post again with new questions.

I didn’t see that thread til after I upgraded, but I’m not sure what those queries do in any case. Thankfully, the site is a small one, and only one channel with about a dozen entries used Huot’s file field. After upgrade, these were all converted to text input fields and the images displayed correctly, but since I wanted to allow file uploads in the future I changed the fieldtype to EE’s native “File” in 2.4 which wiped out the contents of the former field. Since the entries were so few I just re-uploaded the images manually and changed the code in the template. I’m posting these notes here in case others have the same question. This certainly has given me pause for upgrading other sites, in addition to the fact I ran into two bugs in 2.4 itself that displayed ugly errors on the live site. Haven’t seen that in EE before . . .

    Hello vmills,

I am glad to hear that you were able to update.

Now that you know of the bugs you can plan for them or wait for the next version that addresses those bugs.

Is there anything else I can help you with?

    Cheers,
