Is it possible to use custom verification question instead of CAPTCHA?
I am using one on my board (vbulletin) and it successfully stops spammers.
For example,
“How much is three plus five”?
or something like that.

I believe this Add-On (Accessible Captcha) will do just what you are looking for and it works in both ExpressionEngine 1 and 2.
