After updating our 2.3.1 site to 2.4, any attempt to edit posts throws this error (hosting account number replaced with zeros):

    A Database Error Occurred
    Error Number: 1146

    Table ‘eh00000a.exp_comments’ doesn’t exist

    SELECT `entry_id`, COUNT(*) as count FROM (`exp_comments`) WHERE `entry_id` IN (‘34’, ‘35’, ‘33’, ‘31’, ‘32’, ‘30’, ‘29’, ‘28’, ‘27’, ‘26’, ‘25’, ‘24’, ‘23’, ‘22’, ‘21’, ‘20’, ‘18’, ‘17’, ‘16’, ‘15’, ‘14’, ‘13’, ‘19’, ‘12’, ‘9’, ‘8’, ‘7’, ‘6’, ‘3’) GROUP BY `entry_id`

    Filename: controllers/cp/content_edit.php

    Line Number: 332

The above error appears when attempting to use Content > Edit or Modify > Entry.

This site does not use comments at all. The site contains few articles—it is essentially an empty site being prepared for client review. We have backups of the templates, snippets and files - not sure about the database from prior versions. Couldn’t we just add this missing table? Are other required tables missing?

The updater indicated a successful completion. Health Check shows everything in order. Help!

I’ve seen a few mentions of issues when you don’t have the comments module installed.  Would you by any chance have uninstalled that module?

ok, I installed Comments module and that solved the problem, thanks!

Still have problem with images uploaded to entries with SafeCracker File field type. there is now url in generated html.
Are there any changes with this module in 2.4? see some comment here: http://ellislab.com/expressionengine/user-guide/installation/update.html
Now I have SafeCracker 2.1 as it comes from EE 2.4 freelancer zip pack.

    Michael,

Thank you, that resolved it. Whew.

One would think EE would know not to throw an error for a fundamental function—posting, or viewing a list of posts—just because an unrelated module which we don’t need is not installed.

Do I need to file a bug report? Never done that before.

Well, it is a related module - comments do get associated with channel entries and comments aren’t useful apart from the channel module…;)  But it’s not a required module so EE shouldn’t have an issue when it’s not installed.

The bug tracker is up in the top nav - but search first as I’m guessing its there already.

This bug is in the tracker:

    https://support.ellislab.com/bugs/detail/17380

If you have the Comments Module uninstalled and you upgrade an existing site to 2.4 you need to enable the module otherwise errors will ensue when editing any existing entry. This effects “publishing” an entry as well.

    Error Number: 1146
