This question may be related to a resolved thread.

After downloading the site database of the 1.7.1 site and trying two more times to update to 2.4 locally I still get “Site Error: Unable to Load Site Preferences; Invalid Preference Data”. The update process runs through without any error messages, the database is updated, new tables created, the 1.x templates are archived ... I looked at config.php and database.php more than once, can´t find anything.

So I am following Kevins advice and opening a new thread.
Thanks for some advice what I could try.

    Hi Wolfram,

I’m sorry to see you’re still having trouble with this. Let me get some login information from you, and we’ll have a look at this first-hand. Be on the lookout for an email from me, and in the meantime, could you prepare an SQL dump of the exp_sites table as it was in your database before the upgrade and again after? I’ll need you to send those to me so we can do a little investigation to see what happened.

Just checking in to see if you still need help with this, Wolfram. If you never received that email from me, let me know and I’ll be happy to send it again.

Thanks for checking Kevin, I replied to your mail (lost because of wrong channel, I guess): In the meantime I tried some more things and thought it would very easy become to complicated to explain to you guys what fields have been converted while preparing the update (e.g. ngen ->text field, matrix in several channels). So I went for a clean install of 2.4, updated the template files, rebuilt the site and copy/pasted the entries from the db I had exported before. Since 30 min or so, everything is woking again 😊 Bottom line: this thread can be closed now. (Still puzzled though what was the problem, because I had updated another site with the exact same add-ons and the same host before ...)

Anyway: Thanks for your offer to jump right in,
    Wolfram
